The UK Cyber Security Council has demonstrated how more workplace diversity can close the cyber industry’s skills gap while strengthening the UK’s resistance to cyberattacks. According to the UK Cyber Security Council, the sector’s relevance is expanding tremendously in tandem with our more linked and digital lifestyles; nevertheless, rising demands have also resulted in a skills deficit. The Council feels that removing entrance obstacles and pushing for increased diversity is a critical problem for the industry that, if ignored, might make the nation more susceptible to potential cyberattacks.

Simon Hepburn, CEO of the UK Cyber Security Council, stated that one of the government’s primary goals is to position the United Kingdom as one of the safest countries in the world to live and conduct business online, and the Council will endeavour to close the industry’s skills gap. One inherent component of that objective will be for the Council to assist in removing entrance restrictions, allowing individuals from a diverse variety of ethnicities and backgrounds to realise various career opportunities in the industry. Aside from providing £5.3 billion in GVA to the UK economy, the industry has an annual projected lack of 10,000 professionals, and half of UK firms indicate a fundamental skills gap when it comes to the cyber realm, despite the growing need for digital robustness to fight attacks. Efforts are being made to make the industry reflective of all segments of society and all demographics.

As shown in new research by Cleverpop, more gender-diverse groups improve business choices because new viewpoints are put on the table. Cyber thieves can and will fully exploit workforce diversity. It adds to the sector’s skills mismatch, may hinder development and contribute to inherent prejudices inside businesses.

The Council was established as the representative of the UK’s cyber security professionals to offer broad industry participation and encourage competence across the field. According to the UK government’s National Cyber Security Strategy, its goal is to establish, promote, and harmonise professionalism and support advancement in cyber security career prospects.
