About Course
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) lays out a range of guidelines and safeguards established by the federal government in 1996 to ensure that personal health information remains confidential.
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Act of 1996), HITECH Act (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) of 2009, and the final Omnibus Rule 2013 were all put in place to:
- Help protect patient’s privacy rights
- Protect “Protected Health Information” (PHI)
- Impose Regulations on Covered Entities and Business Associates
This masterclass goes through the compliance regulations and protection measures set in place to maintain patient privacy. We first examine the fundamentals of HIPAA and distinct features of Protected Health Information (PHI) and Electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI) and show you how HIPAA applies to each. We, then, discuss the evolution of HIPAA especially during Covid-19. We explore the HIPAA Privacy Rule, Security Rule, Enforcement Rule and the individual rights they enumerate. We discuss the roles and responsibilities of covered entities and business associates in ensuring the responsible handling of PHI according to HIPAA regulations for maintaining PHI’s privacy and security.
